Now available in the UK domestic market, this travel humidor containing 20 Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchills was originally destined for sale exclusively within the Travel Retail sector.

The cigars are dressed in both the classic bands associated with the Wide Churchill but also have an additional foot band that distinguishes them from regular production.

Since it’s launch in 2010, the Wide Churchill has become a firm favourite among aficionados who enjoy the saporous medium bodied Romeo y Julieta blend in a wide gauge format.

History

Named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers, the origins of R&J as a cigar brand date back to 1875. The brand rose to international fame during the early years of the 20th century under the direction of Don “Pepin” Fernandez, who was amongst the first to recognize the attraction of the cigar band. During his heyday, no less than 20,000 different bands were used in production.

Following the launch of the short Churchill in 2006, the slightly longer and much stouter Wide Churchill reflects the current fashion for heavy-ring gauge vitolas.

Winston Churchill became a devotee of R&J. Since his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has been commemorated on a band and used to describe the marque’s most famous size – 7 inches x 47 – the Churchill.

Tasting notes

Romeo y Julieta cigars use a balanced blend of filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone. Although similar in taste to the original Churchill, this cigar is shorter and more stout, producing a larger amount of smoke. Spicy, creamy and earthy favours make for an aromatic but light taste. A leathery note is maintained throughout the cigar with a peppery twang coming through towards the end.

This cigar is perfect for novice smokers, yet it’s without a doubt still a complex, innovative masterpiece.
