H. Upmann Cigars

The History of H. Upmann cigars

Legend has it that Herman Upmann was a banker who much preferred Cuban cigars to finance! In 1844 he decided to purchase a cigar factory and launch a brand under his own name. Still going strong today this brand is nearly 180 years old.

This brand has a strong British link as in 1922 the then bankrupt business was purchased by J Frankau & Co (now Hunters & Frankau ltd – the UK’s sole Cuban Importer). In 1935 the brand was finally in Cuban hands as it was purchased by Menéndez Y Garcia, the then owners of Montecristo.

Whether entirely true or not, it is true that the Upmann Petit Upmann was President John F Kennedy’s favourite cigar. Did he instruct his aide Pierre Salinger to buy every box in Washington before signing the Cuban embargo? We do know that President Kennedy had in excess of 1000 boxes in his private collection! A lighter flavoured range than many, the introduction of the heavier gauge Magnum range has ensured the popularity of the brand for many decades to come.

H. Upmann Cigar Taste Profile

Upmann cigars stand out with their distinctively darker shade compared to other Cuban cigars. The wrappers themselves exude an enticing aroma that ignites an irresistible desire to light up the cigar without delay. When indulging in an Upmann cigar, the lips are greeted with a subtle spiciness and a fleeting sweetness. Generally, H. Upmann cigars fall within the light to medium strength range.
